The town originated as Dyberry Forks and was laid out as a village in 1826 by land speculator Jason Torrey, who recognized its strategic location at the head of the canal; it was renamed Honesdale in 1829 after Philip Hone, a New York City merchant, former mayor, and first president of the Delaware and Hudson Canal Company. Incorporated as a borough on January 28, 1831, Honesdale became the official county seat on May 4, 1841, following earlier seats at Wilsonville, Milford, and Bethany. Its defining historical event occurred on August 8, 1829, when the Stourbridge Lion, the first steam locomotive to operate on rails in the Western Hemisphere, made an experimental run on a gravity railroad connecting to the canal, marking the start of commercial railroading in the United States. A full-scale replica of the locomotive is displayed at the Wayne County Historical Society Museum in Honesdale. Economically, Honesdale transitioned from its 19th-century reliance on anthracite coal transportation—fueled by the canal and early railroads—to a modern focus on retail, professional services, restaurants, and tourism centered on its railroad heritage. As of 2023, the borough had a median household income of $38,469 and a median age of 42.6 years, with a diverse economy supporting a population where 4.41% of residents were foreign-born. The area features Victorian-era architecture, including the Old Stone Jail built in 1859, and hosts events like the annual Roots & Rhythm Festival in Central Park, near the historic Wayne County Courthouse. Honesdale remains a cultural hub in the Poconos/Endless Mountains region, preserving its legacy through sites like the Wayne County Historical Society and attracting visitors to its preserved 19th-century structures.
