Tamiment is an unincorporated community in Lehman Township, Pike County, in the Pocono Mountains of northeastern Pennsylvania, situated along Bushkill Falls Road near Bushkill Falls. Originally founded in 1921 as Camp Tamiment, it served as an educational and recreational summer camp for socialists and workers, evolving into a prominent resort renowned for its live entertainment, golf course, and skiing facilities until its closure and liquidation in 2005. Today, the 2,200-acre site primarily functions as a residential community known as The Glen at Tamiment, featuring over 400 homes, community amenities, and preserved natural surroundings. Established by the People's Educational Camp Society (PECS), an affiliate of New York City's Rand School of Social Science, Camp Tamiment aimed to provide affordable rest, recreation, and political education through lectures, performances, and publications, generating revenues that funded the Rand School from the 1930s to the 1950s. Under early leadership including director Bertha Mailly, the camp opened on June 21, 1921, with its first guests from a socialist group in Allentown, Pennsylvania, and quickly became self-sustaining by emphasizing progressive ideals alongside activities like swimming and tennis.
