Paupack Township is a second-class township in Wayne County, northeastern Pennsylvania, United States, situated along the northern banks of Lake Wallenpaupack. Incorporated in 1850 from part of Palmyra Township, it spans 33.15 square miles (85.9 km²), including 5.13 square miles (13.3 km²) of water, and is characterized by its scenic lakeside landscape, rural residential subdivisions, and recreational appeal. As of the 2020 United States Census, the population was approximately 3,700, with a median age of 60.5 years and a median household income of $39,041, reflecting a predominantly older, White (over 90%) community engaged in seasonal and outdoor activities. The name "Paupack" derives from Lenape (Delaware Indian) terminology associated with the local creek and region, reflecting the area's indigenous Woodland Period inhabitants prior to European settlement. Early European activity began with a Connecticut land claim surveyed in 1751, establishing frontier settlements governed under Connecticut law from 1774 amid the Wyoming Valley disputes between Connecticut and Pennsylvania claimants. The first permanent family, that of Silas Purdy, arrived in 1793, drawn to the area's natural resources like timber and fertile lands, though initial development was slow due to the rugged terrain and limited infrastructure. By the time Wayne County was formed in 1798, Paupack was part of the sparsely populated Palmyra Township, with growth accelerating after the creation of Lake Wallenpaupack in the early 20th century for hydroelectric power, transforming the region into a resort destination.
