Established as a settlement in the mid-18th century, Milford's history traces back to 1733 when Tom Quick became the first recorded European settler in the area, followed by early development along the Sawkill Creek. The borough was officially incorporated on December 25, 1874, from portions of Milford Township, which had been part of Wayne County before Pike County's formation in 1814. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, Milford grew as a milling and agricultural center, with Judge John Biddis laying out the village plan in 1796 at the confluence of U.S. Routes 6, 209, and 206. Geographically, Milford sits at an elevation of about 525 feet above sea level, bordered by the Delaware River to the east and surrounded by forested ridges and wetlands typical of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. The town's compact downtown features tree-lined streets and over 50 structures listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including the Pike County Courthouse (built 1874) and the Jervis Gordon Grist Mill Historic District (1837–1882).
