Greene Township, which includes Greentown, was formed on April 24, 1839, from parts of Palmyra Township in Pike County and is named after American Revolutionary War General Nathanael Greene, who participated in key battles such as Trenton and Brandywine. Early settlement in the area began in the early 1800s, driven by German immigrants who established farms, gristmills, and small villages along the branches of Wallenpaupack Creek, fostering a rural economy centered on agriculture, custom milling, and water-powered industries like tanning. By the mid-19th century, community hubs such as general stores and churches emerged, with Greentown's Gilpin Bros. General Store and Post Office (circa 1900) exemplifying local commerce and social life. The region's economy later shifted toward tourism and recreation, influenced by the creation of Lake Wallenpaupack in the early 20th century and the establishment of Promised Land State Park, with land purchased by the Commonwealth from 1902 to 1904 and formally dedicated in 1905 as a forest reserve and state park, later developed for public use by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. Natural events, including the devastating 1955 flood, impacted infrastructure like historic mills, but surviving farm buildings and sites preserve the area's agricultural heritage.
