Kunkletown is an unincorporated community and the largest village in Eldred Township, Monroe County, Pennsylvania, United States, primarily known as a rural farming area with historical ties to early Pennsylvania German settlers. Located approximately 40 miles northeast of Allentown and 70 miles northwest of New York City, it sits at coordinates 40°50′52″N 75°26′54″W and an elevation of 531 feet (162 meters) above sea level, within a fertile landscape drained by tributaries of the Lehigh River such as Aquashicola Creek. The community uses ZIP code 18058 and is part of Eldred Township, which had a population of 2,596 according to the 2020 United States Census, predominantly White (90.8%) with small percentages of other racial groups including Black or African American (1.8%) and those identifying as two or more races (5.2%). Named for Joseph Kunkle, one of the area's earliest businessmen and hotel owners in the mid-19th century, Kunkletown developed within Eldred Township, which was established on September 23, 1851, from portions of Ross Township and named after Monroe County Judge Nathaniel B. Eldred. European settlement in the region began as early as 1742, when Moravian missionary Count Nicholas Ludwig von Zinzendorf visited the Native American village of Meniolagomeka—meaning "a tract of fertile land surrounded by barriers"—and established a short-lived Christian mission that operated until 1760. By the late 18th century, the area had become a hub for Pennsylvania German farming families, with key early infrastructure including a grist mill built in 1762 by Abraham Smith, a log schoolhouse erected in 1783, and a Union Church constructed in 1779, now known as St. Matthew’s United Church of Christ. The Kunkletown post office opened in 1864, with Joseph Johnson as its first postmaster, marking the village's formal recognition.
