Matamoras is a borough in Pike County, eastern Pennsylvania, United States, recognized as the state's easternmost municipality and situated along the Delaware River at the tri-state border with New York and New Jersey. Covering a total area of 0.8 square miles (2.1 km²), of which 0.7 square miles (1.8 km²) is land, it functions primarily as a residential suburb with access to the river for recreation and proximity to Interstate 84 for commuting to nearby urban centers like Port Jervis, New York. As of the 2020 United States Census, the population was 2,362 (estimated at 2,449 as of July 1, 2023), with a density of approximately 3,300 people per square mile and a median age of 42.5 years. Originally part of Westfall Township, the area was settled in the mid-19th century, with early development including a hotel and ferry established in 1844 by Gabriel Mapes and later expanded by Oliver S. Dimmick. The community was named Matamoras in 1848, honoring the Mexican town of Matamoros—captured by American forces during the Mexican-American War—and its streets were laid out by Quaker settler J. Biddis to mimic those of Philadelphia. Incorporation as a borough occurred on January 18, 1905, marking its separation from Westfall Township and the establishment of local governance.
